Atelier Gaál is the working studio of Daniel Gaál, a traditional hand papermaker and paper marbler whose practice encompasses letterpress printing, bookbinding, mosaics, verre églomisé, gilding, fine art, and other traditional decorative arts.

Daniel has trained extensively with Dan and Regina St. John of Chena River Marblers, as well as Robin Ashby of RH Ashby, completing multiple intensive programs of study in traditional and contemporary paper marbling.

Dan and Regina St. John of Chena River Marblers have devoted more than four decades to the practice and teaching of paper marbling and are among the foremost contemporary practitioners of the craft. Their work encompasses traditional watercolor and acrylic marbling, historic patterns, color and material preparation, and advanced techniques developed through decades of professional studio practice. Their marbled papers are represented in major collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and they have taught generations of marblers during their extensive careers.

Robin Ashby of RH Ashby is a professional paper marbler, bookbinder, artist, researcher, and instructor whose practice is grounded in the history and preservation of traditional marbling. His training includes study with Dan and Regina St. John as well as marblers in France and Germany. He teaches paper marbling at institutions throughout the United States, and his marbled papers are held in the permanent collection of the German Book and Writing Museum of the German National Library in Leipzig.

Daniel has been a full-time professional marbler since 2024, developing his practice through intensive training, continued study, teaching, and daily studio work. His experience includes acrylic, gouache, and classic watercolor marbling, traditional and combed patterns, color and material preparation, and overmarbling.

Through Atelier Gaál, Daniel teaches small, hands-on workshops with substantial time at the tray and individual instruction. Classes range from relaxed weekend experiences for first-time marblers to intensive courses for students seeking the technical knowledge and practical skills to pursue marbling independently.
